First, let’s understand what gingivitis is. Gingivitis is inflammation of the gum tissue. Gums can appear red, and “puffy”. They may be tender when brushing and flossing, and they may bleed.

Gingivitis is a mild form of gum disease that can be reversed with good homecare and regular dental visits. Left untreated, gingivitis can progress to periodontitis, which causes non-reversable destruction of gum tissue and bone surrounding the teeth, bad breath, and tooth loss.

The best way to prevent and reverse gingivitis is to brush at least twice daily, and floss at least once every day. If you haven’t been in the habit of brushing and flossing regularly, bleeding can occur when you begin. Not to worry. This doesn’t mean that you have hurt yourself. It means you are reaching places that haven’t been cleaned in a while. Continue with your good brushing and flossing habits, and the bleeding will subside.

If you have been told you have gingivitis, or think that you might have gingivitis, step up that homecare, and keep all of your dental appointments. We are here to help!
